About Uig & Bernera Development Group

Uig & Bernera Development Group:

Began as the Initiative at the Edge Group for Uig & Bernera

  • Is now the advisory group for the Uig & Bernera Community Coordinator.
  • The Community Coordinator is employed by the Comhairle, but guided by Uig & Bernera Development Group.
  • The Group is taking forward a small number of key projects itself while supporting other community groups through allocation of Community Coordinator's & Community Resource Workers' time.

The Uig & Bernera Development Group is a not-for-profit voluntary group of elected volunteers with the purpose of encouraging and promoting matters relating to the economic and social development of Uig and Bernera, with particular emphasis on creating employment in the area. The group was initially the Iomairt Aig An Oir steering group for Uig & Bernera, and is now well-known throughout the area, and will be continuing in this role beyond the IAAO transitional period.

The Uig & Bernera Development Group has a key role in the social and economic development of the area: Comhairle nan Eilean Siar appointed a Community Co-ordinator for Uig & Bernera in September 2004. The Development Group is now the advisory group for the Co-ordinator, working towards a new Local Outcome Agreement as well as the outstanding targets set in the Uig & Bernera Development Plan under the IAAO.

UBDG welcomes input from individuals and community groups in Uig & Bernera on projects, ideas, issues and problems that they feel the group should consider addressing. The group will focus its efforts on the major projects that are likely to have a real benefit to the community, and will support them by:

  • Researching ideas and looking in to solutions to key problems identified
  • Lobbying public agencies to raise the profile of the key issues they are focusing on, both locally and further afield
  • Looking in to funding sources for these projects, and when appropriate, assisting with the funding bids

Uig & Bernera Development Group is behind this website - having raised the funding and pulled together the content, it is also responsible for the ongoing maintenance and updating of the site.
