By Land and Sea
Caledonian MacBrayne runs car and passenger ferries to Lewis and Harris: from Ullapool to Stornoway, and from the village of Uig in Skye (not to be confused with our own Uig & Bernera!) to Tarbert (Harris). The great news is that the cost of getting to Lewis by ferry will decrease substantially as of October 2008 when new Road Equivalent Tarrif prices begin on a trial basis.
For all ferry journeys it is advisable to book vehicle space in advance, but this is not necessary for passengers. For ferry times, costs and reservations contact: Caledonian MacBrayne on +44 (0)8705 650000 or check timetables and book online at www.calmac.co.uk
You can choose either to bring your car across or leave it at one of the ferry departure points and travel as a foot passenger. It may be more economical to hire a car for a few days while you are here than to bring your own car across on the ferry. Alternatively, you can use our excellent public transport network, or even walk or cycle through the isles. Regular bus services connect with ferry arrival and departures times. The main operators from central Scotland are Scottish Citylink Coaches, telephone +44 (0) 990 5050505 or check times online at www.citylink.co.uk.
You could also opt to get to Inverness, Oban, Mallaig or Kyle by train: it is a great way to relax and take in the stunning Highland scenery as you pass through landscape unseen on the road. For train times and booking contact: www.scotrail.co.uk
Getting from Stornoway to Uig & Bernera
Uig Community Centre is approximately 35 miles from Stornoway; Bernera Community Centre is 25 miles from Stornoway.
Leaving Stornoway, head south on the A859 towards Tarbert. After about 7 miles you will come to a speed limit with a school on your left hand side and a petrol station, café then row of houses on your right. Just after the houses, turn right on to the A858. Carry on for another 7 miles until you get to a left turning on to the B8011 (signposted Uig, Timsgearraidh). You are now on the cul de sac road to Uig. To go to Bernera, three miles along the B8011, turn right onto the B8059. To get to Uig, just keep driving along the B8011!
There are buses six days a week from Stornoway to Uig and Bernera. For timetables and information phone Stornoway Bus Station on +44 (0)1851 7043
